More than 500 people turned out on Saturday, May 3 for the Third Annual Trenton Spirit Walk in Cadwalader Park. It included one- and three- mile walks. Before the walk, attendees warmed up to the live performance of a choir, praise dancers and a drummer. In addition, Aetna, Capital Health System, Horizon, the city of Trenton Recreation Department and St. Francis Medical Center offered health screenings in blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and BMI (body mass index).

The work of Elizabeth Johnson, Isles' COO, is featured in an exhibition at the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark. Click here for a Star Ledger article about the exhibit. Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens, traces the visual appeal of vegetable gardens across centuries and cultures. Come learn the role that vegetable gardening has played in shaping the history, culture and economy of New Jersey. Isles runs the most extensive community gardening program in the state, as well as one of the longest running. Elizabeth Johnson established the Rutgers Newark Urban Gardening program in 1978, four years before she began Isles' program in Trenton.

May 10 and 17: Isles' Homebuyers' Workshop Series. 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Capital Health System - Mercer Campus, 446 Bellevue Ave., Trenton. This two-part workshop will get you ready to become a homeowner. Plus you will receive a homebuyer;s certificate for your two-day participation. May 31: Isles co-sponsors the 12th Annual Trenton Bike Tour. A leisurely 15-mile group bike ride through Trenton. Come explore the wonders of Trenton's urban landscape with your friends, family and neighbors. Along the way you will see and explore some of our state's most historic landmarks. 8:30 a.m. registration and free bike check. 9 a.m. start time. Rain or shine. Call 609.278.2825. Registration fee before May 21 is $5/adult and $3/child and includes a free tee-shirt.
June 17: Isles' YouthBuild Institute Commencement and Awards Ceremony will be held at the Trenton Board of Education offices at 108 North Clinton Ave. For information, contact Carlos Avila at 609.341.4712.
July 12: Isles hosts its 21st Annual House and Garden Tour from 3 to 7 p.m. Tour gardens that are part of themost extensive community gardening program in New Jersey. Tickets are $50 for adults and $12 for children under 12. Meet at 10 Wood Street in Trenton to board the bus. Contact: Robin Miller, 609.341.4739

Isles was honored on Friday, Feb. 29 with a visit to its YouthBuild Institute by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a host of dignitaries, including Congressman Rush Holt, Congressman Frank Pallone and Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer. Trenton has the potential to bring in up to $2.4 million for green collar jobs and career development activiities. Speaker Pelosi also highlighted training Isles will begin in April for YouthBuild students, such as Nikita McFarland, pictured here with Speaker Pelosi, in how to install solar panels.
